With paternal roots from Avellino and Agrigento, “rich voiced” mezzo-soprano Desiree Maira is thrilled to join the Narnia Festival faculty after enjoying an active singing and teaching career along the east coast of the United States since 2009.  Recent performance highlights include covering Francesca in The Bridges of Madison Countyin Media, Pennsylvania and being a featured soloist in the Duke Ellington Sacred Concert with the DuPont Clifford Jazz Festival in Wilmington, Delaware.

Musical theater performance credits include The Music Man, Godspell, Into the Woods, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Cinderella, Annie, Beauty and the Beastand more.  Once an avid performer of opera (and oratoria), Desiree’s favorite roles to sing were the title roles in Carmen, L’Italiana in Algeri andSerse, Madame in Cendrillon, Second and Third Lady in The Magic Flute, Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Zita in Gianni Schicchi, and Mistress Quickly in Falstaff.

Desireeformerly served as musical theatre faculty at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and currently teaches at University of the Arts, Rider University and Rowan University (while teaching privately in Philadelphia, where she currently lives). She holds a master’s degree in opera performance from The Boston Conservatory and a bachelor’s in vocal performance from Stetson University, as well as a teaching certification from New York Vocal Coaching.

Desiree has students (both current and former) performing in shows on Broadway, off-Broadway, national tours, regional theaters and films.
