Rudolf Leopold is considered one of the most important Austrian musicians in terms of prestige and versatility.
Born in 1954 in Vienna, Rudolf Leopold studied cello at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst with Richard Krotschak and Tobias Kühne. At the same time he also studied piano and composition. He attained international fame as a member of the Franz Schubert Quartet from 1974-84 and as solo cellist with Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s “Concentus Musicus”. In 1981 he founded the Vienna String Sextet and toured throughout Europe, the USA and Japan for 23 years. With this ensemble he made many recordings of masterpieces for EMI and Pan Classics and wrote several arrangements.
Since 2007 he has been performing in the baroque ensemble he formed, “Il Concerto Viennese“.
As a soloist he has performed not only most of the standard repertoire (in 2008 he played the Dvorak Concerto in the Berliner Philharmonie) but also some rarities (like Dohnányi, Pfitzner and Enescu) and has premiered contemporary pieces with orchestra. With his wife, pianist Teresa Turner – Jones, he has toured many countries as a duo and as a trio.
Rudolf Leopold taught chamber music at the Wiener Musikhochschule from 1983 to 1990. Since 1990 he has been distinguished professor for Violoncello at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Graz.
